A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·Tie the double in the main line first, with a Bimini twist or spider hitch, and test it. The knot is built from the double, not single line.
  • ·Joins a mono or fluorocarbon leader to a braid or mono main line. Leadertec describes it for heavy leader to lighter main line.
  • ·The turn count follows the main line: 4 to 6 turns of the double for mono or fluorocarbon, 10 to 15 for braid.
  • ·For a braid main line, Leadertec ties the Bimini with 30 to 40 turns instead of the usual 20.

You should now see

Two strands of main line ending in a closed loop, lying alongside one strand of leader with a long overlap and plenty of leader tag.

If it goes wrong

Starting with single main line, or with a double whose knot has slipped. You see one strand of main line against the leader instead of two.

Fix: Tie the Bimini twist or spider hitch first and give it a firm test pull before you lay it against the leader.

Why: The Yucatan is built from the double. Both legs wrap the leader together and the leader end later passes through the loop, so the same wraps in single line make a different, weaker join.

Seating sequence — where failures are born

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Moisten

    Wet the structure before any load reaches it.

    Zero. Nothing tightens yet.

  2. 02 Load

    Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.

    Light and even — both ends moving together.

  3. 03 Dress

    Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.

    Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.

  4. 04 Set

    One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.

    Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.

  5. 05 Trim

    Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

Bight in the heavier leader; lighter line wraps the bight, then tucks.
