The three levels

Why it matters. Almost every fish lost to 'the knot slipped' is one of these two junctions tied without seating or without wetting. Own them and most of the failure surface is gone.

What you will be able to do

  • — Dress and seat a knot instead of yanking it tight
  • — Wet every knot before it is drawn up
  • — Tell a tag end from a standing part under load
  • — Trim close without nicking the standing line

The knots, in order

  1. 01Centauri KnotSliding-collar mono terminal that also serves as a simple spool attachment; low-friction close on nylon.
  2. 02Clinch KnotA quick knot for tying a hook, lure or fly to mono or fluoro line, when speed matters more than the improved clinch's extra tuck. Not a knot for braid.
  3. 03Davy KnotTying a small fly to tippet with a quick, compact knot. NetKnots recommends it for flies in sizes 18 to 22.
  4. 04Double Davy KnotDavy with an extra security pass for larger flies or slightly heavier tippet.
  5. 05Easy Snell KnotA simple way to snell a hook, with 5 to 7 wraps around the shank and line, for a straight-line pull when you set the hook.
  6. 06Improved Clinch KnotTying a hook, lure or swivel to monofilament line. NetKnots does not recommend it for braid, and it is hard to tie in heavy line.
