This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

What this plate is telling you

Simple cinch to reel arbor — spool attachment, not a terminal fighting knot.

Save this as a picture and it works with a dead signal and a nearly dead battery, which is when a joint is most often tied badly. The rest of this page — the steps, the seating sequence, the failure modes and the bench — is for the evening before.

Before you start

  • ·On a spinning reel, open the bail before passing the line around the arbor, so the line does not catch outside it.
  • ·Leave the first overhand loose until the final pull. It is the part that slides down and closes on the arbor.
  • ·On a polished arbor, Animated Knots shows winding the line two or three times around the arbor before the first overhand, for more friction.
  • ·Braid can slip around a bare spool even with the knot tight. A base of mono backing grips the arbor better; some anglers tape over the knot instead.

On a spinning reel, open the bail first. Pass the tag end of the line around the arbor of the spool and bring it back out beside the standing line.

You should now see

A loop of line around the bare arbor, with the tag and the standing line leaving the spool side by side.

If it goes wrong

Line caught outside the bail or around the spool lip instead of the arbor. The loop sits crooked and the knot cannot pull down onto the arbor.

Fix: Unwrap it, open the bail, and lay the line around the arbor itself.

Why: The knot works as a noose around the arbor, so the line has to go round the arbor itself for the noose to close on it.

Seating sequence — where failures are born

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Moisten

    Wet the structure before any load reaches it.

    Zero. Nothing tightens yet.

  2. 02 Load

    Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.

    Light and even — both ends moving together.

  3. 03 Dress

    Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.

    Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.

  4. 04 Set

    One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.

    Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.

  5. 05 Trim

    Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

    None. Never trim under load.

  • ·Trim close — the tag will otherwise print through the spooled line.
  • ·Braid on a bare aluminium arbor will slip whatever you tie. Use tape or a mono backing.

Failure modes

Arbor / core-grip family

A grip on a spool arbor or a lead-core sheath — not a join of equals.
