This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Save this as a picture and it works with a dead signal and a nearly dead battery, which is when a joint is most often tied badly. The rest of this page — the steps, the seating sequence, the failure modes and the bench — is for the evening before.
Before you start
- ·Leave plenty of tag. The uni uses a lot of line, and a short tag runs out partway through the turns.
- ·Make 5 or 6 turns, each around both strands inside the loop.
- ·Animated Knots says it works with both braided and monofilament line.
- ·It can also be left as a loop: stop the barrel short of the eye, then lock it by pulling the tag firmly.

Tying procedure — Uni Knot
Step 01 / 4
Pass the tag end through the eye and bring it back so it lies alongside the standing line, with plenty of tag to spare.
You should now see: Two strands running side by side up from the eye, the standing line and the returned tag, with the tag reaching well past where the turns will go.
If it goes wrong: Leaving too little tag. The uni uses a lot of line, and a short tag runs out partway through the turns.

Step 02 / 4
Lay the tag back over the two strands to form a loop, then wrap the tag 5 or 6 times around both strands, passing it through the loop on each turn.
You should now see: 5 or 6 turns lying side by side inside the loop, each one around both strands, with the tag coming out beside the last turn.
If it goes wrong: Turns crossing over each other, or a turn that goes around only one strand. Either shows as a lumpy, uneven row instead of a neat coil.
Fix: Unwind back to the first turn that is out of place and wrap again, keeping each turn beside the last and around both strands.
Why: Wrapping both strands inside the loop is what makes it a uni. As it tightens the outer turns move inside and the inner ones move out, so an even row closes into an even barrel.

Turn the tag back over both strands to make a loop
Hold: Left thumb pins the two strands together near the eye. Move: Right hand turns the tag back and lays it across both strands.

Hold: Left hand holds the loop open against the two strands. Move: Right hand takes the tag round both strands and through the loop, five times.
You should now see: Five turns lying side by side inside the loop, each one around both strands, with the tag coming out beside the last turn.
Step 03 / 4
Wet the turns and pull the tag end to close them into a tight barrel. Then pull the standing line to slide the barrel down to the eye, or stop short to leave a small loop.
You should now see: A short, compact barrel with no open loop left inside it, sitting against the eye or at the loop size you chose.
If it goes wrong: Sliding the barrel before it is fully closed. It stops partway down the line, looks long or fat, or a loose turn stays inside and moves under a thumbnail.
Fix: Stop sliding, pull the tag again until the barrel is tight, then slide it down. If a turn has jammed out of line, cut it off and tie it again.
Why: Closing and sliding are two separate pulls. A barrel that is tight before it moves slides as one piece; a loose one drags turns out of place on the way down.

Hold: Left hand holds the hook. Move: Right hand draws the standing line until the barrel meets the eye.
You should now see: A short, compact barrel with no open loop left inside it, sitting against the eye.
Step 04 / 4
Hold the hook and give the standing line a firm pull to lock the barrel against the eye, then trim the tag to a short stub.
You should now see: A barrel that stays where it is under a firm pull, with a short square tag pointing away from the line.
If it goes wrong: Trimming before the test pull, or trimming so close that the tag draws back into the barrel as the knot settles.
Fix: If the barrel moves on the test pull or the tag has pulled inside, cut the knot off and tie it again with a longer tag.
Why: For a loop knot, hold the barrel where you want it and pull the tag end firmly with less force on the standing line. That locks the barrel without sliding it down to the eye.

Hold: Left hand holds the hook. Move: Right hand pulls the standing line firmly, then trims the tag short.
You should now see: A barrel that stays where it is under a firm pull, with a short square tag pointing away from the line.

Seating sequence — where failures are born
The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.
01 Moisten
Wet the structure before any load reaches it.
Zero. Nothing tightens yet.
02 Load
Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.
Light and even — both ends moving together.
03 Dress
Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.
Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.
04 Set
One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.
Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.
05 Trim
Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

Verify before you load it
Every line is pass or fail. One fail means retie — do not load a knot you argued with.

Field notes — dark, cold, gloves
- ·Retie by feel first, light second — the seat is a tactile event, not a visual one.
- ·Gloves off for the dress phase. Fabric hides a crossing wrap.
- ·Wrong twice in a row means the material or the hardware is fighting you. Change one, not your technique.
Load direction
The pull runs down the standing line into the barrel, and the barrel grips the standing part running through its own middle. Load tightens it — this knot gets harder to move the harder it is pulled.
The barrel is squeezing the straight line that runs through it. Nothing outside the barrel is doing any work.
Correct vs wrong
The same knot drawn correctly and then the way it actually gets tied wrong. Only the mistake moves between plates.
A clean barrel of five turns you can slide down the standing line before it locks.

The barrel creeps down the standing line under sustained load instead of locking. On braid, which is slicker and rounder than nylon, three turns can pull through entirely — braid wants six or seven, not five.
