From your first hook to the knots that only earn their keep under load.

Three levels, drawn from the same 91 records the rest of the app reasons over.

Tying the Uni Knot, what most often goes wrong?

The three levels

0/17 knots held

Why it matters. Almost every fish lost to 'the knot slipped' is one of these two junctions tied without seating or without wetting. Own them and most of the failure surface is gone.

What you will be able to do

  • — Dress and seat a knot instead of yanking it tight
  • — Wet every knot before it is drawn up
  • — Tell a tag end from a standing part under load
  • — Trim close without nicking the standing line

The knots, in order

  1. 01Palomar KnotTies line to a hook or lure with the line doubled through the eye. Animated Knots recommends it for braided line; pick it when the eye takes two strands side by side.
  2. 02Improved Clinch KnotTying a hook, lure or swivel to monofilament line. NetKnots does not recommend it for braid, and it is hard to tie in heavy line.
  3. 03Uni KnotTying a hook, lure or other terminal tackle to braided or monofilament line. The barrel slides down to the eye, or stops short and locks to leave a small loop.
  4. 04Double Uni KnotReliable way to join two lines of similar or moderately different diameters. Works for mono-to-mono, fluoro-to-mono, and many braid-to-leader pairings when wrap counts are adjusted.
  5. 05Surgeon’s KnotJoining a tippet to a leader, including lines of moderately unequal size. The whole tippet passes through the loop on each pass, so it suits a tippet or short section of line.
  6. 06Arbor KnotTying line to the bare arbor of a reel spool before winding it on. The first overhand closes on the arbor like a noose, held by a stopper knot in the tag.

Milestones

0 of 7 earned. Each one is a thing you can do, not a score.

  • First knot tied

You logged a rep. The log is what makes every suggestion here specific to you.

  • First knot held

3 clean reps of the same knot — past beginner's luck.

  • Ten reps logged

Repetition is the whole method. Ten is where the hands start to know it.

  • First quiz passed

80% or better on any level — you can pick the knot, not just tie it.

  • Foundation complete

Every knot in the first level practised and tested.

  • Path complete

All 17 knots across the three levels.

  • Reassessed

Three quiz runs. Coming back to a level you passed is how you find what faded.
