Slim Beauty Knot
For braid → leader, double line → leader, leader → tippet.
This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.
What this plate is telling you

Save this as a picture and it works with a dead signal and a nearly dead battery, which is when a joint is most often tied badly. The rest of this page — the steps, the seating sequence, the failure modes and the bench — is for the evening before.
Before you start
- ·Used to tie a leader or tippet to the main line, including braid to a mono or fluorocarbon leader, and a heavy shock tippet to a much thinner line.
- ·Double about 40 to 60 cm (15 to 24 in) of main line, enough for both layers of wraps and the loop.
- ·Leave the figure eight in the leader loose until the doubled line is through it. It is closed onto the main line near the end.
- ·Wrap counts differ between sources, from 4 down and 3 back to 5 to 7 down and 4 to 6 back.

Pulling the figure eight tight at this point. The openings close, and the doubled main line will not pass through both of them.
Fix: Work the knot open with a fingertip until both openings are clear again, or tie a fresh double overhand.
Why: The figure eight is closed onto the main line later, in step 4. Until then it only needs to hold its shape.

Step 01 / 5

You should now see: A loose figure eight in the leader with a clear top opening and bottom opening, each wide enough to take doubled main line.
If it goes wrong: Pulling the figure eight tight at this point. The openings close, and the doubled main line will not pass through both of them.

Step 02 / 5
Double about 40 to 60 cm (15 to 24 in) of the main line and pass the loop end through the top and bottom openings of the figure eight.
You should now see: The doubled main line threaded through both openings of the figure eight, with a long loop and plenty of doubled line past the leader knot.
If it goes wrong: Threading through only one opening. The main line lies beside part of the knot instead of through it, and the wraps have nothing to lock against.
Fix: Pull the doubled line back out and pass it through both openings of the figure eight.
Why: Running through both openings lets the figure eight close down and grip the doubled main line in step 4.

Step 03 / 5
Wrap the doubled main line down the leader, away from the figure eight, 4 to 6 times, then wrap back over those turns toward the figure eight 3 or 4 times.
You should now see: Two layers of doubled-line turns on the leader, the second lying over the first and ending a short way from the figure eight, leaving a small gap.
If it goes wrong: Turns that cross, leave gaps, or split the two legs of the double. You see leader showing between turns, or one leg of the main line riding over the other.
Fix: Unwind to the last clean turn and wrap on from there, pinching the two legs together as you go.
Why: Wrap counts vary between sources. NetKnots gives 4 down and 3 back, Salt Water Sportsman 4 to 6 down and 3 to 4 back, and Cast and Spear 5 to 7 down and 4 to 6 back.
If wrong: Down-and-back wraps bunched instead of even — Weak side; slip risk.

Step 04 / 5
Pass the loop end of the doubled main line through the first gap, between the figure eight and the wraps. Wet the knot and pull the leader tag against the leader to close the figure eight onto the doubled line.
You should now see: The loop sticking out through the gap beside the figure eight, and the figure eight drawn down small and firm around the doubled main line.
If it goes wrong: Passing the loop through a gap further along the wraps, or leaving the figure eight open. The wraps can slide toward the leader end, and an open figure eight shows as two loose leader loops.
Fix: Pull the loop back out and feed it through the gap right beside the figure eight, then close the figure eight before the final pull.
Why: The loop through the first gap stops the wraps unwinding, and the closed figure eight gives them a firm stop to seat against.
If wrong: Figure-8 left open — wraps never locked into it — Pull-apart under shock.
If wrong: Loop missed the figure-8 re-entry — Structural failure — not this join.

Step 05 / 5
Pull the leader and the doubled main line, not the loop, apart with a fast, steady pull. Cut off the loop and trim the main line tag and the leader tag close.
You should now see: A slim join with the wraps packed against the figure eight, the main line and leader leaving the knot in a straight line, and short tags.
If it goes wrong: Pulling on the loop, or loading one leg of the double harder than the other. The wraps close crooked and the lines leave the knot at an angle.
Fix: Pull only the leader against the doubled main line. If the lines still leave at an angle or wraps have crossed, cut the knot off and tie it again.
Why: The loop is cut off once the knot is seated, so it carries no load. A stiff leader tag trimmed close passes through the rod guides without catching.

Seating sequence — where failures are born
The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.
01 Moisten
Wet the structure before any load reaches it.
Zero. Nothing tightens yet.
02 Load
Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.
Light and even — both ends moving together.
03 Dress
Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.
Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.
04 Set
One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.
Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.
05 Trim
Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.
