Pitzen Knot

This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.
What this plate is telling you
Compact high-retention tippet terminal with precise tag path.
Save this as a picture and it works with a dead signal and a nearly dead battery, which is when a joint is most often tied badly. The rest of this page — the steps, the seating sequence, the failure modes and the bench — is for the evening before.
Before you start
- ·Also called the Eugene bend or the 16-20 knot. NetKnots notes it is easier to tie in lighter line or tippet than in heavier line.
- ·Leave a long tag. Four wraps and the tuck through the finger loop use more tippet than they look.
- ·For slippery braided line, NetKnots points to the San Diego Jam, a variant that passes the tag through a bottom opening before the top loop.
- ·Wet the knot before sliding it to the eye, and move it with your fingertips rather than by pulling the standing line.

Step 01 / 4

Step 02 / 4
Hook the line over your index fingertip to hold a small loop open, then wind the tag four times around both parallel strands, working back down toward the eye.
You should now see: Four neat wraps around both strands, running from your fingertip toward the eye, with the small loop still held open on your finger.
If it goes wrong: Wraps crossing over each other, or winding away from the eye instead of toward it. The tag then finishes out of reach of the finger loop.
Fix: Unwind to the fingertip and wind again toward the eye, laying each wrap next to the last.
Why: The four wraps close around the standing line to form the grip. Crossed wraps do not bed evenly, and the knot seats lumpy.
If wrong: Seated early on a wrong path — Locks a defective structure you cannot inspect.

Step 03 / 4
Pass the tag end back through the small loop held on your finger, then slip your finger out.
You should now see: The tag comes out through the small loop, and the wraps and loop hold their shape loosely without your finger in them.
If it goes wrong: Letting the finger loop collapse before the tag goes through, or passing the tag beside the loop instead of through it. The knot falls apart when pulled.
Fix: Keep the fingertip in the loop until the tag is through. If the tag missed, back it out and pass it through the loop again.
Why: This tuck locks the tag inside the wraps. The pull in step 4 closes the loop around it.
If wrong: Tag buried in the stack — Unverifiable — treat as failed.

Step 04 / 4
Pull the tag to close the knot on the standing line. Wet the knot, slide it down to the eye with your fingertips, then pull tight and trim the tag.
You should now see: A small, compact knot sitting against the hook eye, the wraps closed neatly and the tag trimmed short.
If it goes wrong: Dragging the knot down to the eye by pulling the standing line. The line rubs through the knot and heats, and the knot can stop short of the eye.
Fix: Stop pulling the standing line. Wet the knot again and push it down with your fingertips. If the line looks scuffed or kinked, cut it off and retie.
Why: NetKnots closes the knot on the standing line first, slides it to the eye by hand, and only then pulls tight. Moving it by pulling the standing line makes the line saw through the closed wraps.

Seating sequence — where failures are born
The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.
01 Moisten
Wet the structure before any load reaches it.
Zero. Nothing tightens yet.
02 Load
Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.
Light and even — both ends moving together.
03 Dress
Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.
Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.
04 Set
One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.
Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.
05 Trim
Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

Field notes — dark, cold, gloves
- ·Retie by feel first, light second — the seat is a tactile event, not a visual one.
- ·Gloves off for the dress phase. Fabric hides a crossing wrap.
- ·Wrong twice in a row means the material or the hardware is fighting you. Change one, not your technique.
