A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

What this plate is telling you

Needle-assisted fly-line to leader transition coil.

Before you start

  • ·NetKnots gives it for joining leader to fly line when you are not using a loop-to-loop connection.
  • ·You need a needle slightly wider than the leader butt, and a smaller needle, nail or toothpick to hold a channel under the wraps.
  • ·Keep the channel short and centred, about 3 mm into the fly-line tip, so the needle does not split the coating.
  • ·Feed the thin end of the leader in quickly while the hole is still stretched, leaving about 20 cm (8 in) of butt for the wraps.

You should now see

The needle entering the centre of the fly-line end and coming out of the side a few millimetres back, with the coating intact around it.

If it goes wrong

Pushing the needle in off-centre or too far, so it splits the coating or runs deep into the core. A split in the coating is easy to see at the tip.

Fix: Pull the needle out, cut off the damaged tip of the fly line, and make a new channel in the fresh end.

Why: A short centred channel lets the leader leave the fly line in a straight line. A torn coating leaves a weak spot that the wraps cannot cover.

Seating sequence — where failures are born

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Moisten

    Wet the structure before any load reaches it.

    Zero. Nothing tightens yet.

  2. 02 Load

    Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.

    Light and even — both ends moving together.

  3. 03 Dress

    Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.

    Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.

  4. 04 Set

    One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.

    Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.

  5. 05 Trim

    Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.
