This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·Built for lines of very different diameters or materials, such as mono to braid. The heavier line makes the loop and the lighter line wraps.
  • ·Push about 25 cm (10 in) of the lighter line through the loop, enough for 10 wraps and the pass back through.
  • ·The wraps work toward the closed end of the loop and finish there. Wraps pushed off the end of the loop undo the join.

Hold:
Left hand holds the two legs of the loop together
Move:
Right hand lays the lighter line alongside, its end by the bend of the loop

You should now see: A long loop in the heavier line, with the lighter line lying alongside and its end beside the bend.

If it goes wrong

Making the loop in the lighter line. The thick line cannot be wrapped tightly around a thin loop, and the join will not hold.

Fix: Swap the roles: the heavier line makes the loop and the lighter line does the wrapping.

Why: The join works because the thin line bites down onto the stiff, doubled heavy line, which is built for joins between lines of very different diameters.

Seating sequence — where failures are born

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Moisten

    Wet the structure before any load reaches it.

    Zero. Nothing tightens yet.

  2. 02 Load

    Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.

    Light and even — both ends moving together.

  3. 03 Dress

    Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.

    Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.

  4. 04 Set

    One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.

    Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.

  5. 05 Trim

    Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

    None. Never trim under load.

  • ·Retie by feel first, light second — the seat is a tactile event, not a visual one.
  • ·Gloves off for the dress phase. Fabric hides a crossing wrap.

Bight in the heavier leader; lighter line wraps the bight, then tucks.

  • !Bight in the lighter line — the wraps have nothing to bite
  • !Wraps walked off the bight instead of packed against the fold
  • !Tag never tucked back through the bight, so the wraps dump
Fails when
  • !Loop tied in the lighter line, so the thick line cannot wrap tightly and the join does not hold
  • !Wraps tightened far from the closed end, so the join bends and the wraps loosen when pulled
  • !Wraps slid off the end of the loop while seating
  • !Only one end of the light line pulled to seat, so the wraps close unevenly

Two Albrights from different entrants in the same IGFA-lab challenge tested 'tremendously' differently and neither figure was published, so the knot has a documented spread and no recorded number.

Percentages come from published tests on their own line, their own knot-tyer and their own pull rate. Yours is a different system. Treat a figure as a reason to test, not as a result you already have.
