Before you start

  • ·Tie it in nylon monofilament. NetKnots reports this loop failing in fluorocarbon well below the line's rating.
  • ·Tie the overhand about 15 cm (6 in) from the end and keep it open, so the tag can come back through it twice.
  • ·Thread the hook or lure onto the tag before the return passes. It cannot be added once they are made.
  • ·Set the loop size before you wet and tighten. Once the knot closes, the loop stays at that size.

You should now see

An open overhand about 15 cm (6 in) up the line with a hole wide enough to pass the tag through twice, and the tag hanging free below it.

If it goes wrong

Pulling the overhand snug as you tie it. The hole closes up and there is no room to bring the tag back through twice later.

Fix: Work the overhand open with a fingertip until the hole is wide again. If the tag has become too short to finish, cut the knot out and start again from a fresh end.

Why: NetKnots reports this loop holding well in nylon monofilament but failing in fluorocarbon well below the line's rating, so tie it in nylon.

Seating sequence — where failures are born

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Moisten

    Wet the structure before any load reaches it.

    Zero. Nothing tightens yet.

  2. 02 Load

    Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.

    Light and even — both ends moving together.

  3. 03 Dress

    Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.

    Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.

  4. 04 Set

    One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.

    Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.

  5. 05 Trim

    Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

NetKnots' own testing is reported qualitatively — as strong as the non-slip mono loop in monofilament, failing 'well below the line's rated strength' in fluorocarbon — with no number attached to either result.

Percentages come from published tests on their own line, their own knot-tyer and their own pull rate. Yours is a different system. Treat a figure as a reason to test, not as a result you already have.
