Step 01
Tie a loose overhand knot about 15 cm (6 in) from the end of the line, crossing the tag end over the standing line and out through the loop. Leave the overhand open.

You should now seeAn open overhand about 15 cm (6 in) up the line with a hole wide enough to pass the tag through twice, and the tag hanging free below it.
If it goes wrongPulling the overhand snug as you tie it. The hole closes up and there is no room to bring the tag back through twice later.
Fix: Work the overhand open with a fingertip until the hole is wide again. If the tag has become too short to finish, cut the knot out and start again from a fresh end.

Step 02
Pass the tag end through the hook or lure eye, keeping the overhand open above it.

If it goes wrongLetting the line twist on its way to the eye, so it crosses over itself between the overhand and the eye. The two sides of the lure loop look uneven.
Fix: Pull the tag back out of the eye, let the line untwist until it hangs flat, then feed the tag through the eye again.
Why: The hook or lure goes on before the tag returns through the overhand. Once the return passes are made, there is no way to add it without starting over.

Step 03
Bring the tag back through the overhand from behind, the side opposite where the line came out, then pass it through the same way a second time. Pull the standing line to draw the box small without tightening it.

You should now seeA small box-shaped closed loop of line sitting just behind the lure loop, drawn down small but not yet tight, with the tag pointing toward the lure.
If it goes wrongEntering the overhand from the same side the line came out, or making one pass instead of two. No small box forms, and pulling the standing line makes the lure loop slide smaller.
Fix: Pull the tag back out of the overhand and make both passes again from behind. If the box stays large and loose, pull the standing line a little harder before moving on.
Why: The two passes lay the tag around the overhand so it is gripped when the knot closes. A pass from the wrong side leaves the tag free to run, and the loop behaves like a slip knot.

Step 04
Hold the top of the box and pull the tag gently to slide the box toward the eye until the loop is the size you want. Wet the knot, pull tag and standing line together while holding the lure, then pull the standing line.

Why: Pulling tag and standing line together closes both passes evenly. The final pull on the standing line alone seats the knot in the direction a fish will load it.

Step 05
If you want an extra hitch, tie a half hitch with the tag around the standing line, wet it and pull it tight. Give the loop a firm test pull, then trim the tag close to the knot.
