What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·Use it on flies with an up-turned or down-turned eye. NetKnots advises against it on a straight-eye hook.
  • ·The finished knot rests behind the eye on the thread wraps at the head of the fly, with the tippet coming straight out of the eye.
  • ·It does not pass an open loop over the fly as the Turle knot does, which NetKnots notes helps with bulky patterns.
  • ·Hold the fly by the bend of the hook when you pull the knot tight.

Seen from the side, the hook eye bends clearly up or down away from the line of the hook shank.

If it goes wrong

Judging the eye from above and starting on a straight-eye fly. Viewed from the side, the eye lines up with the shank.

Fix: Tie on with a knot meant for straight eyes, or change to a fly with a turned eye.

Why: NetKnots lists this knot for up-turned and down-turned eyes and advises against it on straight eyes. The finished knot sits behind the turned eye on the head of the fly.

Seating sequence — where failures are born

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Moisten

    Wet the structure before any load reaches it.

    Zero. Nothing tightens yet.

  2. 02 Load

    Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.

    Light and even — both ends moving together.

  3. 03 Dress

    Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.

    Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.

  4. 04 Set

    One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.

    Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.

  5. 05 Trim

    Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

  • ·Retie by feel first, light second — the seat is a tactile event, not a visual one.
  • ·Gloves off for the dress phase. Fabric hides a crossing wrap.
