A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·The line passes through the eye twice, so the eye has to be large enough to take two turns of your line. Check this on small hooks.
  • ·NetKnots lists it for tying monofilament or fluorocarbon to swivels, snaps, hooks and lures.
  • ·On heavy line, hold the hook with pliers so you can pull hard enough to seat the knot.
  • ·Trim the tag to a stub of about 3 mm (an eighth of an inch) rather than flush.

Hold:
Left hand holds the hook, eye toward you
Move:
Right hand feeds the tag through the eye a second time, the same way as the first

You should now see: Two turns of line through the eye lying side by side, a small double loop at the eye, and a long tag.

Pass the tag end through the eye, then pass it through again in the same direction, leaving a small double loop of line on the far side of the eye.

If it goes wrong

Pulling the double loop closed against the eye, or letting its two strands spread apart. A closed loop leaves no opening for the tag at step 3.

Fix: Open the double loop again and keep a fingertip in it while you wrap, so both strands stay together and open.

Why: The two passes share the contact with the eye between two strands. Animated Knots notes this helps retain line strength, especially when the eye is wider than the line.

Seating sequence — where failures are born

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Moisten

    Wet the structure before any load reaches it.

    Zero. Nothing tightens yet.

  2. 02 Load

    Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.

    Light and even — both ends moving together.

  3. 03 Dress

    Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.

    Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.

  4. 04 Set

    One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.

    Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.

  5. 05 Trim

    Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

  • ·Retie by feel first, light second — the seat is a tactile event, not a visual one.
  • ·Gloves off for the dress phase. Fabric hides a crossing wrap.
  • ·Wrong twice in a row means the material or the hardware is fighting you. Change one, not your technique.

The pull is carried by two loops around the eye instead of one, so the metal edge takes half the pressure at any point. The coil behind them does the gripping, exactly as a clinch does.

Two turns on the eye, not one. That is the whole difference from a clinch, and it is worth about the same again on a thin hard line.

Failure modes

When this family fails, it fails as these. The recovered end still outranks the name.

Clinch family

Wraps down the standing part, then a tuck that jams the barrel to the eye.

  • !Wraps walked or crossed — load on one turn of the barrel
  • !Barrel never jammed to the eye, so the tuck is decoration
  • !Tag never tucked, or the extra Improved / Trilene pass missing
