Before you start

  • ·Overlap the leader and tippet by 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in). Two passes through the loop use more line than a single overhand.
  • ·The whole tippet goes through the loop twice, so make this join before a fly is tied on the tippet.
  • ·Form the loop from both lines held together, flat and untwisted, so the passes trap both of them evenly.
  • ·NetKnots says most fly fishermen find it easier to tie than a blood knot.

Lay the leader and the tippet alongside each other with 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) of overlap.

You should now see

Leader and tippet lying parallel and straight through the overlap, with enough of each end past the overlap to hold.

If it goes wrong

Too short an overlap. The two passes through the loop use up line, and the leader tag ends up too short to pull on.

Fix: Slide the lines apart and start again with a longer overlap.

Why: Both lines go through the loop twice, which takes more line than a single overhand.

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Moisten

    Wet the structure before any load reaches it.

    Zero. Nothing tightens yet.

  2. 02 Load

    Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.

    Light and even — both ends moving together.

  3. 03 Dress

    Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.

    Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.

  4. 04 Set

    One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.

    Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.

  5. 05 Trim

    Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

NetKnots says only that it 'tests similar to the J Knot', which is a comparison to another knot that has no published figure either.

Percentages come from published tests on their own line, their own knot-tyer and their own pull rate. Yours is a different system. Treat a figure as a reason to test, not as a result you already have.
