This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·Works best with two lines of about the same diameter, such as leader and tippet sections. Very different sizes close into an uneven barrel.
  • ·Leave long tags. Each needs 5 to 7 turns and a tuck, and the turns draw in toward the middle as the knot closes.
  • ·Plan matching turn counts on both sides, wound in opposite directions so the two sides mirror each other.

Hold:
Left hand holds both lines in the middle of the overlap
Move:
Right hand lays line B along line A until the overlap is long

You should now see: Two lines lying parallel along a long overlap, each tag reaching well past the middle.

Written step 01

Cross the ends of the two lines so they overlap with the tags pointing in opposite directions, leaving each tag long enough for 7 turns and a tuck. Pinch the lines where they cross.

If it goes wrong

Too short an overlap. The second tag runs out before it has made the same number of turns as the first.

Fix: Start again with longer tags. Squeezing turns out of a short tag leaves one side with fewer turns than the other.

Why: The blood knot uses a lot of line, because the turns on each side gather in toward the middle as it closes.

Seating sequence — where failures are born

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Moisten

    Wet the structure before any load reaches it.

    Zero. Nothing tightens yet.

  2. 02 Load

    Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.

    Light and even — both ends moving together.

  3. 03 Dress

    Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.

    Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.

  4. 04 Set

    One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.

    Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.

  5. 05 Trim

    Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

  • ·Retie by feel first, light second — the seat is a tactile event, not a visual one.
  • ·Gloves off for the dress phase. Fabric hides a crossing wrap.
  • ·Wrong twice in a row means the material or the hardware is fighting you. Change one, not your technique.

Both lines are pulled, in opposite directions, and each line's turns close on the OTHER line. Neither barrel grips its own standing part, which is why the two lines have to be a similar diameter for it to work.
