Double Double Uni Knot
For braid → leader, double line → leader.
This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.
What this plate is telling you
Doubled-braid Uni against a leader Uni. More grip than Double Uni, more bulk than FG.
Save this as a picture and it works with a dead signal and a nearly dead battery, which is when a joint is most often tied badly. The rest of this page — the steps, the seating sequence, the failure modes and the bench — is for the evening before.
Before you start
- ·Double about 30 cm (12 in) of braid to make a 15 cm (6 in) double line. Every braid wrap is made with both strands together.
- ·It differs from a basic Double Uni in that the braid side is tied doubled, which NetKnots says matters most in slippery braided line.
- ·Use 5 or 6 leader wraps, and fewer as the leader gets heavier.
- ·Leave all three tags on until the knots are pulled together, so you can see that neither knot has slipped.

The two braid strands drifting apart or twisting around each other, so later wraps go on as single strands. You see a gap open between them.
Fix: Pinch the doubled braid flat and run it between finger and thumb until both strands lie side by side, then lay it back along the leader.
Why: Every wrap in step 2 is made with both braid strands together, which is what separates this knot from a basic Double Uni.

Tying procedure — Double Double Uni Knot

Step 01 / 4

Step 02 / 4
Cross the end of the doubled braid back over itself to form a loop, pinching the crossing and the leader together. Pass the doubled end through the loop 8 times around both lines, then pull it to close the wraps.
You should now see: A neat barrel of 8 doubled-braid wraps snugged down on the leader, each wrap showing two strands side by side.
If it goes wrong: Wraps crossing over each other, or the two braid strands splitting apart inside a wrap. The barrel looks lumpy and the strands show as separate turns.
Fix: Loosen the wraps by pushing them back toward the loop, straighten the doubled strands, and pull the doubled end again slowly.
Why: NetKnots closes this barrel onto the leader before starting the leader side. Once closed it holds its place while you tie the second knot.
If wrong: Too few wraps on the doubled-braid Uni — Slick braid walks.

Step 03 / 4
Tie the same knot with the leader tag: form a loop back over both lines, pass the tag through it 5 or 6 times around both lines, and pull the tag to tighten. Use fewer wraps on heavier leader.
You should now see: A second, shorter barrel of leader wraps closed down a short way from the braid barrel, with a little bare line between the two.
If it goes wrong: Leaving a barrel only partly tightened. When the knots are pulled together the loose wraps slide unevenly and the tag can draw back through.
Fix: Pull each tag again until its wraps stop moving before sliding the knots together. If the leader wraps have crossed, undo that knot and tie it again.
Why: Heavy leader is stiff and does not bed down well over many turns, so the wrap count drops as the leader gets heavier.
If wrong: One Uni closed before the other — A hinge that clicks in the guides, then parts.

Step 04 / 4
Wet both knots and pull the leader and main line in opposite directions until the two barrels slide together. Trim the leader tag and both braid tags close.
You should now see: The two barrels butted against each other with no bare line between them, and short tags that do not catch when you run the join through your fingers.
If it goes wrong: Stopping with a gap between the barrels, or trimming the tags before the final pull. A gap shows as bare line between the two knots.
Fix: Wet the knots again and keep pulling steadily until they touch. If a barrel slides apart instead, cut the join off and tie it again.
Why: Pulled together, the two barrels jam against each other. Leaving the tags on until after this pull lets you see that neither knot has slipped.

Seating sequence — where failures are born
The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.
01 Moisten
Wet the structure before any load reaches it.
Zero. Nothing tightens yet.
02 Load
Take up slack slowly until the wraps begin to gather.
Light and even — both ends moving together.
03 Dress
Watch the wraps stack in order; stop and back off if any cross.
Hold, do not pull. Correction happens here or not at all.
04 Set
One continuous pull to full seat — no sawing, no jerks.
Firm, single direction, standing line against the terminal end.
05 Trim
Cut the tag square, leaving a short stub proud of the knot.

- ·Retie by feel first, light second — the seat is a tactile event, not a visual one.
- ·Gloves off for the dress phase. Fabric hides a crossing wrap.
