This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·Animated Knots says the round turn should take the initial strain while you complete the knot.
  • ·For a heavy load, such as a large vessel or a strong wind, Animated Knots adds one or two more turns before the hitches.
  • ·Tie both half hitches in the same direction. Together they form a clove hitch around the standing part.
  • ·Leave a tail several inches long past the last hitch. A short tail can pull back through a hitch as the load cycles.

Hold:
Left hand holds the standing part below the rail
Move:
Right hand takes the end over the rail and round again beside the first turn

You should now see: Two passes of rope side by side on the rail. Held lightly, the round turn takes most of the pull.

If it goes wrong

Making a single pass before starting the hitches. There is one strand on the ring, and the load pulls straight on the hitches while you try to tie them.

Fix: Take the hitches off and add the second pass before tying anything. For a heavy boat in strong wind, add another turn around the post.

Why: The round turn carries the strain while you tie, and its friction on the post keeps carrying it once the knot is finished. The half hitches only stop the turn from unwinding.

  • ·Dress is the lock. A pretty knot that is not dressed is not finished.
  • ·HMPE usually wants a splice, not a hitch you learned in polyester.
  • ·If you cannot break or inspect it under the load you expect, it is the wrong job.

A round turn or stacked turns take the load; the lock only keeps them there — and still breaks by hand.

  • !No round turn — the lock is asked to carry surge
  • !Turns not stacked, so the hitch walks on a tide
  • !Expected to jam when the job was a release-able dock line

  • !The second half hitch runs the opposite way, so the pair are not a clove hitch and can creep apart as the load comes and goes
  • !A gap is left below the hitches, so the turn and hitches shift as the boat surges and the tail works shorter
  • !The tail is short and pulls back through a hitch as the load cycles

Strength, and where the number comes from

Not established

The '~60–75%' band it used to carry has no source; the nearest published figure, 65% for 'two half hitches' in the US Naval Institute manila table, is a different knot without the round turn that carries the load here.

Percentages come from published tests on their own line, their own knot-tyer and their own pull rate. Yours is a different system. Treat a figure as a reason to test, not as a result you already have.
