This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·Suited to short, attended stops and lines you adjust, such as a fender line on a rail. It has no locking part, only two turns pinching each other.
  • ·Polished stainless and a load that keeps swinging to new angles can work it loose.
  • ·For a boat left unattended or overnight, use a round turn and two half hitches on a piling, or a cleat hitch on a cleat.
  • ·Leave a tail several inches long, so there is rope for two half hitches round the standing part.

Hold:

Right hand takes the end round the post and back across the front

You should now see: One turn round the post with the end lying diagonally over the standing part, ready to go round again.

If it goes wrong

Bringing the end back behind the standing part instead of over it. The second turn then has no crossing to trap, and the knot falls apart when you pull.

Fix: Unwrap it and make the turn again, laying the working end over the standing part as it comes back around.

Why: This crossing is what the second turn traps. Without it the two turns only lie next to each other on the post.

The step list compresses the finish. Run these phases in order, one at a time.

  1. 01 Form

    Build the structure loose enough to see every turn.

    None. Shape first.

  2. 02 Dress

    Nest every turn. Crossed parts will walk or jam.

    Light — hold the shape.

  3. 03 Set

    Load the standing part so the intended turns take the strain.

    Working load, not a snatch.

  4. 04 Check

    Confirm the lock still breaks or inspects as the job requires.

    None extra.

  5. 05 Commit

    Only load it after the structure reads correct. Wrong means remake.

Verify before you load it

Every line is pass or fail. One fail means retie — do not load a knot you argued with.

A round turn or stacked turns take the load; the lock only keeps them there — and still breaks by hand.

  • !No round turn — the lock is asked to carry surge
  • !Turns not stacked, so the hitch walks on a tide
  • !Expected to jam when the job was a release-able dock line
