This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·The second turn tucks in beside the first. Without that tuck it is a taut-line hitch, which Animated Knots says cannot take strain until the half hitch is on.
  • ·Pulled tight, the two turns hold the load while you add the half hitch, which lets you adjust tent or awning lines as you rig them.
  • ·With Dyneema, Spectra or polypropylene, assume it will slide. Animated Knots adds that in three-strand nylon it may slide over time.
  • ·For tension you will walk away from, use a fixed knot such as a trucker's hitch.

You should now see

Two turns on the standing part inside the loop, the second crossing the first, with the tail pinned between the first turn and the line from the object.

If it goes wrong

Laying the second turn beside the first without tucking it in. That makes a taut-line hitch: pull the tail and the turns slide along the standing part instead of jamming.

Fix: Take the second turn off and go around again, this time tucking the tail in between the first turn and the line from the object.

Why: The tuck is what makes this a midshipman's hitch. It jams the second turn against the first, so the turns can hold the load on their own.

    Build the structure loose enough to see every turn.

  2. 02 Dress

    Nest every turn. Crossed parts will walk or jam.

    Light — hold the shape.

  3. 03 Set

    Load the standing part so the intended turns take the strain.

  4. 04 Check

    Confirm the lock still breaks or inspects as the job requires.

  5. 05 Commit

    Only load it after the structure reads correct. Wrong means remake.

  • ·Dress is the lock. A pretty knot that is not dressed is not finished.
  • ·HMPE usually wants a splice, not a hitch you learned in polyester.
  • ·If you cannot break or inspect it under the load you expect, it is the wrong job.

An adjustable friction hitch that holds under working tension rather than to rope-break, and the '~45–65%' it used to carry has no source.

Percentages come from published tests on their own line, their own knot-tyer and their own pull rate. Yours is a different system. Treat a figure as a reason to test, not as a result you already have.
