This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·You need two fixed points: one to make the first end fast to, and a second the tail can pass around, such as a hook, cleat or rail.
  • ·The loop has to keep its shape when pulled toward the second anchor. A directional figure eight loaded from the wrong end becomes a noose.
  • ·The loop and anchor give a theoretical 3:1 purchase, much less in practice because rope runs over rope. That is still enough to bend a rail or break a light line.
  • ·Rope stretches and loads settle, so check the tension again after a while. Low-stretch line holds tension better than cheap polypropylene.

If it goes wrong

Reaching for this hitch as a snubber on anchor chain. It tensions a line between two fixed points and has no turns that grip, so nothing holds it in place on the chain.

Fix: Keep the trucker's hitch for pulling a line tight between two fixed points. To grip another rope, use a friction hitch such as a rolling hitch.

Why: The rope from this first anchor is the standing part. The loop you tie in it next works as a crude pulley against the second anchor.
