This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.

Before you start

  • ·Animated Knots reports that Evans Starzinger tested several stopper knots and this was the only one that did not slip in Dyneema.
  • ·Expect to cut it off later. Animated Knots says it cannot be untied after heavy loading.
  • ·It is a stopper only. To join two HMPE ropes, splice them.
  • ·Check the finished knot against the opening it has to stop at. If it fits through, it is too small for that fitting.

You should now see

A loose buntline hitch on the standing part, the tail coming out from under its last wrap, and two open loops made by the wraps.

If it goes wrong

Wrapping only around the standing part and not around the tail itself. There is then no buntline hitch to pass the tail through in the next step.

Fix: Undo the wraps and start again: around the standing part, around the tail, around the standing part again, then under.

Why: The buntline holds the tail and the standing part against each other. The harder the pull, the more tightly the two are forced together.

    Build the structure loose enough to see every turn.

    Nest every turn. Crossed parts will walk or jam.

Strength, and where the number comes from

Not established

A stopper for very slippery rope, published only as 'will not pull through in HMPE'; the '~50–70%' it used to carry has no source.

Percentages come from published tests on their own line, their own knot-tyer and their own pull rate. Yours is a different system. Treat a figure as a reason to test, not as a result you already have.
