Timber Hitch

This card does not say how strong the knot is. A retention figure comes from a bench, in one material, at one diameter, tied by somebody who ties it all day — and the line in your hand is none of those. What it does tell you is whether the thing you have just tied is the thing the record describes.
What this plate is telling you
Hoist or drag a spar. Holds under tension only. Collapses unloaded — that is the hitch.
Save this as a picture and it works with a dead signal and a nearly dead battery, which is when a joint is most often tied badly. The rest of this page — the steps, the seating sequence, the failure modes and the bench — is for the evening before.
Before you start
- ·It holds only while the standing part stays loaded. With no pull on it the hitch practically falls apart and can drop off the spar.
- ·To hoist or tow a spar lengthwise, tie the hitch near the middle and add a half hitch around the spar near the hauling end.
- ·Leave enough end to twist three times around the rope that circles the spar, following the lay of the rope.
- ·For a line that goes slack and then loads again, tie a hitch that holds without tension, such as a rolling hitch.

Tying procedure — Timber Hitch
Step 01 / 4
Pass the end around the spar, then take it around the standing part.
You should now see: The line circling the spar, with the end hooked around the standing part and pointing back along the rope that goes around the spar.
If it goes wrong: Taking the end around the spar a second time instead of around the standing part, which leaves a round turn rather than the start of the hitch.

Twist the end around its own part, the rope that circles the spar, three times, following the lay of the rope.
You should now see: Three twists of the end around its own part, lying against the spar rather than out along the standing part.
If it goes wrong: Wrapping the end around the standing part, or stopping at one twist. When you pull, the end slides out of the hitch.
Fix: Unwind the end and twist it three times around the rope that goes around the spar.
Why: The twists are what hold. Under load they are pinned between the rope and the spar.

Hold: Left hand holds the loop round the standing part. Move: Right hand twists the end round the rope that circles the spar, working back along it.
You should now see: Three twists of the end round its own part, lying against the spar rather than out along the standing part.
Step 03 / 4
Pull the standing part so the rope closes on the spar and presses the three twists against it.
You should now see: The twists pinned flat against the spar under the rope, and the hitch staying put when you tug the standing part.
If it goes wrong: Twists left standing away from the spar. The rope tightens, but the end is not trapped and works free under load.
Fix: Slack off, push the twists down onto the spar and pull the standing part again.
Step 3 of 4 · move 1 of 1
Pull the standing part so the rope closes on the spar and grips the twists
Hold: Left hand steadies the spar. Move: Right hand hauls the standing part until the turn bites.
You should now see: The twists pinned flat against the spar under the rope, and the hitch staying put when you tug the standing part.
Step 04 / 4
Keep a steady pull on the standing part while it works. To hoist or tow a spar lengthwise, add a half hitch around the spar near the hauling end.
You should now see: Under load the hitch stays tight and the spar follows the pull in line. Slack off and the hitch loosens enough to shake off.
If it goes wrong: Expecting it to hold when the line goes slack. With no pull on it the hitch practically falls apart and can drop off the spar.
Fix: Use it only where the pull stays on. For a line that goes slack and then loads again, tie a hitch that holds without tension, such as a rolling hitch.
Why: The half hitch keeps the spar lined up with the pull so it does not twist. With it, the timber hitch usually sits near the middle of the spar.

Hold: Left hand guides the spar. Move: Right hand keeps the standing part loaded.

01 Form
Build the structure loose enough to see every turn.

02 Dress
Nest every turn. Crossed parts will walk or jam.
Light — hold the shape.
03 Set
Load the standing part so the intended turns take the strain.

04 Check
Confirm the lock still breaks or inspects as the job requires.

05 Commit
Only load it after the structure reads correct. Wrong means remake.

Verify before you load it
Every line is pass or fail. One fail means retie — do not load a knot you argued with.

Field notes — dark, cold, gloves
- ·Dress is the lock. A pretty knot that is not dressed is not finished.
- ·HMPE usually wants a splice, not a hitch you learned in polyester.
- ·If you cannot break or inspect it under the load you expect, it is the wrong job.
When this family fails, it fails as these. The recovered end still outranks the name.
