Before you start

  • ·Animated Knots says it cannot be untied under load and is hard to release after heavy loading. If the halyard comes off the shackle often, use a bowline.
  • ·Animated Knots says it cannot be tightened around a large pole or ring, because the gap between the object and the turns stays too big for them to grip.

The halyard runs through the shackle eye with a tail hanging beside the standing part, longer than two wraps plus a short reach back to the shackle.

If it goes wrong

Pulling through too little tail. You run out partway through the second turn, or the end will not reach the loop beside the shackle for the tuck.

Fix: Pull the end back out of the shackle and start again with more tail. That is quicker than trying to finish with a short end.

Why: The whole hitch sits against the shackle, which is what keeps it compact. Animated Knots describes it for joining a halyard to the shackle at the head of a sail.

Percentages come from published tests on their own line, their own knot-tyer and their own pull rate. Yours is a different system. Treat a figure as a reason to test, not as a result you already have.
