  1. Step 01

    Pass the end of the halyard through the shackle and pull through enough tail to wrap the standing part twice and still reach back to the shackle.

    The halyard runs through the shackle eye with a tail hanging beside the standing part, longer than two wraps plus a short reach back to the shackle.

    If it goes wrong

    Pulling through too little tail. You run out partway through the second turn, or the end will not reach the loop beside the shackle for the tuck.

    Fix: Pull the end back out of the shackle and start again with more tail. That is quicker than trying to finish with a short end.

    Why: The whole hitch sits against the shackle, which is what keeps it compact. Animated Knots describes it for joining a halyard to the shackle at the head of a sail.

  2. Step 02

    Wrap the tail twice around the standing part, making the first turn next to the shackle and laying the second turn just above it, on the side away from the shackle.

    You should now see

    Two turns lying side by side on the standing part, the first beside the shackle and the second above it, with a small loop left between the shackle and the first turn.

    If it goes wrong

    Taking only one turn, or letting the second turn ride over the first. Count the turns and check they lie next to each other before you tuck.

    Fix: Unwind back to the shackle and wrap again, laying the second turn beside the first on the side away from the shackle.

    Why: Two turns give the same structure as the Stevedore stopper, which Animated Knots says this hitch shares, only attached to a shackle instead of standing alone.

  3. Step 03

    Bring the tail back toward the shackle and tuck it through the small loop beside the shackle, so the end comes out right next to the shackle.

    You should now see

    The end emerges at the shackle and is almost hidden, with both turns still wrapped around the standing part just above it.

    If it goes wrong

    Tucking the tail through the turns, or away from the shackle, instead of through the loop beside it. The end then sticks out above the turns rather than at the shackle.

    Fix: Pull the tail back out, find the loop between the shackle and the first turn, and tuck the end through that loop so it exits beside the shackle.

    Why: Animated Knots notes that when finished the end exits beside the shackle and is almost invisible, which is what makes the hitch compact enough for a halyard.

  4. Step 04

    Pull the tail tight, then haul hard on the standing part to seat the turns down against the shackle.

    You should now see

    A small, hard barrel of turns tight against the shackle that does not shift when you pull on the standing part.

    If it goes wrong

    Expecting to undo it after a hoist. It cannot be untied under load and is hard to release once heavily loaded, and with the tail trimmed short it is not for critical loads.

    Fix: If the halyard has to come off the shackle often, use a knot that unties after loading, such as a bowline. If this one has jammed, take the load off and work the turns loose, or cut it and retie.

    Why: Animated Knots adds that it cannot be tightened around a large pole or ring: the gap between the object and the turns stays too big for the turns to grip.
