The sheet bend is the mesh knot cultures keep rediscovering.

Does not pick a knot

This page does not pick a knot for you. DNA, molecules, quantum braids and vortices stay off Decide.

Netting a mesh by hand

The sheet bend is the mesh knot cultures keep rediscovering. Watching a needle build the rows is the shortest route to why that is.

What it means

A 2025 computational survey of archaeological and ethnographic knots finds a small core repertoire — sheet bend, reef, overhand, cow hitch, clove hitch — with the sheet bend as the default mesh knot. That is cultural and functional evidence, not a strength table.

What it predicts

  • ·Sheet bend (weaver’s knot) is the usual net mesh.
  • ·Reef appears as a bind, not as a load-bearing bend.
  • ·Clove and cow hitch recur as object hitches.

What it does not predict

  • ·It does not invent a retention percentage for a modern braid-to-fluoro join.
  • ·It does not say a net mesh is a fishing terminal.
  • ·It does not change what Decide recommends.

Not for

  • ·Replacing FG or Alberto on a guide-critical leader
  • ·Anything Decide reads
