Synthetic molecular knots

Closed molecules built as trefoils and more complex knots. Ends are fused.

Does not pick a knot

This page does not pick a knot for you. DNA, molecules, quantum braids and vortices stay off Decide.

What it means

First synthetic trefoil in 1989. Leigh and others later built higher-crossing closed knots. Micheletti’s ‘periodic table’ is about which closed knots self-assemble from identical fragments. These are not working-end rope, and they cannot be untied the way a bowline is untied.

What it predicts

  • ·A closed molecular strand can be a trefoil or a higher-crossing knot.
  • ·Symmetry can make a higher-crossing knot easier to assemble than a simpler one.
  • ·Chirality of the closed knot is a chemical observable.

What it does not predict

  • ·It does not rate a sheet bend.
  • ·It does not prove that a knotted protein is stronger — that claim is still open.
  • ·It does not feed Decide.

Not for

  • ·Dock line, leader, or tippet
  • ·Any Decide constraint

This essay is not about a fishing or boat knot we cover.
